Welcome to Ellensburg, Washington

Ellensburg, in central Washington, situated in the absolute center, heart of Washington state, offers a rural atmosphere and quieter pace than in the frantic cities. Ellensburg, Washington, is the home of Central Washington University, which contributes to the community culture and diversity of the area.

Ellensburg still has a downtown, as rare as that is in freeway bypassed small town America. A visionary urban planning group connected with the Ellensburg Chamber of Commerce began working to preserve and enhance the downtown in the late 1960's. This small town managed to keep the malls and “big box” chain retail stores at bay—only recently Fred Meyers built a store down by the railroad tracks. Even it fits in, with a unique western motif facade.

Although it is sometimes easily dismissed as a “cow town,” Ellensburg (population 15,000) provides plenty of opportunities for folks to enjoy visual and other creative arts. Many concerts, plays and other performances are hosted at Central Washington University. Jazz in the Valley, and other concert and theater venues are well supported. You will find fine art in the galleries in Ellensburg. The Clymer Museum of Art is renowned. And of course Seattle is simply a two hour drive—close enough to attend opera or other performance events. The small town and rural environment is good for kids. There are opportunities for a wide range of activities for families and the public school system is first rate.

One of our claims to fame and history is the long running Kittitas County Fair & Ellensburg Rodeo held every year during Labor Day Weekend. From the start of the Ellensburg Rodeo Parade (recognized as the horsiest ever) to the final call at the rodeo ground's bucking chute, it's a weekend of non-stop action!

Other recreational amenities in the area include the Yakima River which is rated one of the best catch-and-release trout fishing streams in the Pacific Northwest. It flows past both Cle Elum and Ellensburg so there are many local access points.
